Chicago’s new mom recommends pregnant women to get the COVID vaccine – NBC Chicago
When the city of Chicago was in the midst of a second pandemic surge, her mother, Kate Remeer, realized she was in an unprecedented position.
“I found out I was pregnant in November,” Remea said. “I got the first shot in the second semester and the second shot in the third semester. And of course I wondered what to do if something went wrong. But the same idea is on the other side of the coin. It worked. What if I get infected with covid-19 during pregnancy? “
The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention is urging pregnant women to be vaccinated after seeing a disturbing number of unvaccinated mothers becoming seriously ill with the virus.
Dr. Priya Rajan, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, talks to patients daily. She repeated the CDC’s recommendations.
“So far, none of the safety data has raised concerns,” Rajan said. “As the type of doctor who has to tell people terrible things and say that there is nothing we can do to prevent this, something like this vaccine is great.”
Remea gave birth to a healthy baby girl three weeks ago. She said she had no regrets about her decision to be vaccinated during pregnancy.
“Regardless of our vaccination status, when we get infected with this virus, we rely on doctors to save us,” she said.
Despite the high risk of pregnant women, vaccination rates for pregnant women remain low. According to the CDC, about 23% of expected women receive at least one dose.
