Haitians in Connecticut hope to help family affected by devastating earthquake – NBC Connecticut

For Haitians in Connecticut, this is a moment many expected but hoped it wouldn’t. Now they and organizations are working to help the devastated country.

“I was not surprised, but I always wished I had never lived through such a disaster again,” said Angelucci Manigat, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Voice of Haitian, a trilingual monthly newspaper.

When families learned of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake, many rushed to their phones in hopes of hearing loved ones in Haiti tell them they were safe.

Thankfully, Manigat says his family and reporters in the country are doing fine. After checking on them, donate money to help. He says many people in the affected areas are sleeping outside.

“They are still suffering from the aftershocks. Last time many people died going back to their homes, so they learned from that,” Manigat said.

With the death toll still rising, Manigat says this is worse than the earthquake 11 years ago due to the impending tropical depression and additional political turmoil. The country’s president was assassinated just weeks ago.

But organizations are already moving in to help.

Americas says it has sent nearly $3 million in drugs and relief items.

Haiti Hope, which has an office in Connecticut, works with its members on the ground in Haiti.

“Wound care materials are urgently needed, both to treat wounds, and to treat infections,” said Meg-Jean-Louis, chief impact officer at Hope for Haiti.

Hope in Haiti says they have opened their clinic in the country and are treating patients. She says this is happening as its members on the ground deal with their damaged homes and their lives upended.

The work will be hard and will take time, but the organizations say the help people in this state and beyond make a difference.
