The Coalition, Missouri National Guard exercises responses to earthquakes in a simulator at Jefferson Barracks

St. Louise – Eastern and southern Missouri, including the St. Louis area, are likely to suffer damage if an earthquake occurs in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

To prepare for this possibility, structural experts practiced their response to simulating a massive earthquake on Saturday at Jefferson Barracks.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone has produced some of the largest earthquakes in US history. And if an earthquake occurs, buildings in the St. Louis area must be structurally sound.

The Missouri Structural and Visual Assessment Coalition, along with the Air Guard and Army, practiced how to respond to the earthquake.

In the command center, the screens display the number of buildings that are considered safe, have some damage but are safe to enter, or present a danger and should not be entered.

“An exercise sponsored by the Missouri SAVE Alliance to train volunteers in building assessments in the event of an earthquake or other type of disaster such as a hurricane,” said Major Dan Zedak, Missouri National Guard.

“Specifically for the guard, we are here again to get training and participate in the exercise so that we are familiar with Missouri SAVES processes and procedures.”

The Alliance is a group of more than 1,000 volunteer engineers, architects and construction officials – trained to quickly determine which buildings are safe to use and which should be evacuated after a disaster.

This large deployment takes place once every few years.

“Southeastern Missouri and all the way to and including the St. Louis area are at risk if a major earthquake strikes the area,” said Jeff Briggs, earthquake program manager for the Missouri Emergency Management Agency.

“The new Madrid seismic zone, which is a very active seismic zone, is centered here in Missouri.”

It is the most seismically active region east of the Rocky Mountains, with about 200 small earthquakes occurring each year.

The Emergency Management Agency simulated an earthquake and damage to various buildings across Jefferson Barracks.

“When they’re looking outside, what they do is they do a quick assessment, which means they don’t spend more than 10 or 15 minutes in the building. They circle it, and they look for key areas they’ve been trained to look for that might indicate structural damage.” “Maybe the roof is separated from the walls,” Briggs said, or there may be a large crack.

One of the Missouri National Guard’s major planning activities is a potential seismic event in New Madrid.

“As of that, because our unit is unique in that we are a military unit of professional engineers, we believe this training is important in the event we are called upon to do it for Missouri citizens or anyone else affected,” Zedak said.

Scientists say there is a 25 to 40 percent chance of a major earthquake occurring in this region in a 50-year time frame.
