Two earthquakes reported Friday afternoon near Fairbanks | news miner

The Alaska Seismological Center reported that two earthquakes shook the interior of Alaska Friday afternoon.

The first quake, with a magnitude of 3.4, struck at 2:12 p.m. and was 0.4 miles deep, according to the center. The epicenter was 14 miles west of Salcha and 19 miles southwest of Eielson Air Force Base. Less than a minute later, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit the same region. The epicenter of the 2.8-mile-deep earthquake was 14 miles west of Salcha and 18 miles southwest of Ellson Air Force Base.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries as a result of either earthquake.

“They were separated by only about 13 seconds,” said Stephen Holpkamp, ​​an analyst at the Alaska Seismological Center. “The one that people felt was a magnitude 4.0. The other wave might not have been felt because it was so small and the seismic waves at that point might have been overlapping.”

“This is part of a distributed series of faults that kind of cut across the city from Minto to the west after Salcha to the east,” Holpkamp said. “These types of earthquakes are to be expected, we’ve seen them in the past, and we’ll have them in the future.”
