Further reduction of COVID cases required to return Sask.Normal health system: officials
The number of patients infected with COVID-19 is currently declining in the ICU in Saskatchewan, but the overall acute phase is before the state’s healthcare system returns to its pre-wave state, the Saskatchewan Health Department. Treatment and ICU patients need to be further reduced. Is called.
At the COVID-19 media briefing on Tuesday, SHA’s head of emergency surgery, Derek Miller, said, “Everyone wants the number of cases to continue to decline and then the associated hospitalization to do the same.” Said.
“”[That] You can completely restart the service and return to the normal feeling. “
We’re not there yet, Miller said.
As of Tuesday morning, there were a total of 80 ICU patients in Saskatchewan, including 34 with COVID-19.
With the exception of seven former Saskatchewan ICU patients receiving intensive care in Ontario, the total number of state ICUs on Tuesday was without relocating hundreds of medical staff to the ICU or other COVID-19. It’s about the same as the 79ICU bed baseline that the state can usually collect. Efforts as SHA had to do during the 4th wave.
While these relocations contributed to the ongoing backlog of delayed medical services, including 27,000 non-emergency surgeries from March 2020 to the end of October 2021, SHA is in the fourth wave. We sought to reduce its backlog in the summer before the outbreak.
As the number of ICU patients in local hospitals has declined in recent weeks, SHA may launch many delayed services at regional centers such as Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Melfort, Nipawin, Humboldt, Kindersley and Lordstown. I was able to do it.
However, in the case of surgery, Regina and Saskatoon are slowly moving forward with their jump-start efforts “because of the need to maintain care for inpatients and ICU patients.” Service restart update Published just before the briefing.
“Regina has had a long-standing OR nurse vacancy and cannot resume as quickly as other sites.”
According to Miller, the reduction in occupied ICU beds is primarily occurring in rural hospitals.
“We are experiencing high COVID demand in the urban areas of Saskatoon and Regina,” he said. “In order to start moving us in the normal direction, we really need to see them go down with the rest.”
“We haven’t left the forest for the fourth wave yet,” said Dr. Sakibu Shahab, Chief Medical Health Officer. “It will take longer for our acute care and the number of hospitals to decline.”

Continue masking indoors until March 2022: Shahab
Saskatchewan reported 69 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. This is the least increase per day over the weeks.
The state’s current health restrictions, such as the need for masks in indoor public spaces and vaccination programs, will expire on November 30.
Shahab warned two weeks ago that these restrictions should be maintained until winter to prevent an increase in cases of COVID-19.
Shortly thereafter, Prime Minister Scott Moe said the restrictions were extended and likely to be valid at least until the end of the year.
Later, SHA doctors said that lifting the restrictions by the spring of 2022 would lead to another surge and re-challenge the healthcare system.
On Tuesday, Dr. Shahab was asked what recent recommendations he had made to Mo’s government regarding the immediate future of the restrictions.
Shahab refused to talk about specific recommendations to the government, saying they were confidential.
Shahab said vaccination programs will continue to be a “powerful” tool to help reduce infections at events. He said evidence should be provided where it is not required under current public health orders.
“We can review it in January,” Shahab said of the program.
Shahab also recommended that the general public continue to wear masks indoors “until at least March.”
