The Lancet study shows that the Covishield vaccine remained effective amid a surge in delta mutants.
The Pune-based Serum Institute of India’s Covishield vaccine is effective against moderate to severe COVID-19 infections in the second wave, led by the highly contagious delta variant, and the journal Lancet. Revealed a study published in “Infectious Diseases”.
As part of the Lancet study, a multicenter team of Indian researchers, led by the Translational Health Sciences and Technology Institute (THSTI), put together a Covishield during the outbreak of coronavirus infections in India from April to May 2021. Vaccine efficacy was evaluated.
To understand the mechanism of defense, the researchers evaluated the neutralizing activity and cell-mediated immune response against mutants in healthy vaccinated individuals. This study included a comparison of 2,379 confirmed coronavirus infections with 1,981 controls.
The Covishield vaccine was found to be 63 percent effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection in fully vaccinated individuals. Studies show that the vaccine efficacy of complete vaccination against moderate to severe illness was much higher at 81%.
The study was published last week amid growing concerns about Omicron, the first new variant detected in South Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1529 as a “variant of concern”.
The new variant has been labeled by scientists as being much more toxic than the Delta strain that struck India during the second wave of the pandemic. It is expected that there will be a surprising number of mutations that can make Omicron more resistant to the vaccine, induce more severe symptoms and increase infectivity.
Some countries have already imposed travel bans to contain new variants, especially those from southern Africa.
