Magnitude 7.3 earthquake strikes off Indonesia coast

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the eastern coast of Indonesia, Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

CNN reported that locals felt the quake and responded by running through the streets and trying to get to higher ground.

The quake struck 69 miles north of Momiri on the Indonesian island of Flores, and the US Geological Survey says it struck at a depth of 11 miles in the Flores Sea at 10:20 a.m. local time (9:20 p.m. CST).

Initially, there was concern about the possibility of dangerous tsunamis, but the head of the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati, later confirmed that the tsunami warning was over.

She also said that 15 aftershocks have occurred so far, the strongest of which is 5.6.

Indonesia is part of the “Ring of Fire,” a strip around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanic activity frequently occur. It stretches from Japan and Indonesia on one side of the Pacific Ocean through California and South America on the other.
