COLOMBIA – People felt a small earthquake about 15 miles north of Fort Jackson across the District of Columbia on December 27.

The US Geological Survey confirmed that the quake occurred at 2:18 pm between Elgin and Logoff in Kershaw County. The earthquake was initially estimated to have a magnitude of 2.7, but the USGS has since revised its magnitude to 3.3.

It is not clear if there was any damage or injuries in the Elgin area. The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, which is located about 6 miles from the source of the quake, has asked residents not to call 911 unless there is an emergency.

The area’s National Weather Service wrote on Twitter that a tremor was felt at Columbia Metropolitan Airport, where the office is located. This is about 37 miles south of where the earthquake originated.
