More than 700 earthquakes shake Iran in a month

TEHRAN – A total of 701 earthquakes were recorded across the country during the last calendar month Azar (November 22-December 21), according to the seismological networks of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University.

The National Seismological Center recorded sixteen earthquakes measuring more than 4 on the Richter scale in the country, the largest of which occurred on December 14, with a magnitude of 5.1 near Zahedan in the province of Sistan-Baluchestan.

Statistically, 614 earthquakes occurred with magnitudes less than 3, and 71 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 3 to 4.

Sixteen earthquakes measuring more than 4 on the Richter scale have been recorded in the country. Among the provinces of the country, Khorasan Razavi recorded 94 earthquakes, Hormozgan 78 earthquakes, and South Khorasan 76 earthquakes, the highest number of earthquakes in the country.

Last month, 20 earthquakes hit Tehran province, the largest of which was 3.3 on the Richter scale near the Gilan district of Damavand.

The Iranian plateau is located in a seismically active region of the world and is known not only for its major catastrophic earthquakes but also for disasters related to natural hazards, especially earthquakes.
