San Jose Earthquake, MLS returned after approval of the labor agreement

Earthquakes and the rest of the NFL will have the 2020 season after all.

On Wednesday, the League Players Syndicate ratified a new collective bargaining agreement during the 2025 season to end the possibility of closure.

The 26-team league is expected to resume its season in July with a tournament in Orlando, officials say will follow a strict safety protocol for players and employees. While some players were able to practice individually in team facilities, earthquakes had to follow stricter restrictions by public health officials in Santa Clara County in the aftermath of the new Corona Virus pandemic.

Earthquakes and other teams fought two games before the league shutdown in early March due to the outbreak of COVID-19. San Jose last played on March 7 in a 5-2 home defeat by Minnesota United at a time when county health officials recommended not to hold events with crowds of more than 1,000 people.

The MLS Players Association said in a statement that the event allowed the membership “to compete in the game they love.”

The statement added, however, we realize that we are all moving ahead – as players, as fans, as societies, as a world – into a future that looks very different from the one we had imagined a few months ago. There are problems that we collectively face more urgently and more important than competition in the field.

“We grieve, are tired, expect change and expect action. This change will not come in the field, but it will come partly through the strength and determination of all who seek justice and equality. We hope that our return to the field will allow the fans a temporary and semi-natural release.
