In a statement on Friday, the United Nations health Authorities said they have identified wild poliovirus disease in young children in Lilongwe. A wild virus was detected on the African continent for the first time in five years.
Polio has been widespread in many African countries in recent years, but these outbreaks were associated with the virus originally contained in the vaccine, rather than the wild virus. In very rare cases, the live virus contained in the oral polio vaccine can mutate to a version that can cause an epidemic, especially in the non-immune population.
According to WHO, lab tests have shown that the poliovirus detected in Malawi is associated with the poliovirus that is prevalent in Sindh, Pakistan.
“As long as wild polio exists somewhere in the world, all countries are at risk of virus imports,” said Dr. Matidiso Moetti, Head of Africa for the World Health Organization.
Polio spreads primarily from person to person or through contaminated water. It attacks the nervous system and can sometimes paralyze people within a few hours. The disease mainly affects children under the age of five and is almost wiped out in developed countries.
Health officials say polio is endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but cases have been reported in recent years in many countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
WHO and its partners have been struggling to eradicate polio for decades. The original deadline was to wipe out the disease by 2000, but then missed multiple targets to eradicate polio. During the pandemic, many management efforts were interrupted, and some officials warned that it could be a catastrophic setback in eradication plans, allowing the disease to spread further.
