George Floyd Protests: National Guard withdrawal from Los Angeles area

Two sources familiar with the plan told The Times on Sunday that the National Guard is withdrawing from the Los Angeles area a week after its deployment amid largely peaceful protests and some sporadic looting in a few areas.

The National Guard had a clear and controversial presence in the area, guarding historic buildings such as City Hall and also helping to control crowds.

Unprecedented scale and scale protests continued across southern California, with tens of thousands marching on Saturday in various cities to express their anger at police brutality and the killing of George Floyd in police custody.

Floyd’s protests have been peaceful, and the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating videos showing officers using force on some of these demonstrators.

A source, who was not allowed to speak publicly, said the withdrawal could be completed later on Sunday. A second source said that a small number of Guards are still protecting some of Los Angeles’ main assets, but most have returned to their bases.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called up the guards on Saturday after fierce protests in the Fairfax area that ended in some robberies and thefts by people who believed the police had nothing to do with the demonstrations. No major reports of such illegal activity have been reported since Monday, when some companies in Hollywood and Van Nuys were injured. Shops in Long Beach, Downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica also saw people steal goods.

Los Angeles police arrested thousands over the past week, and many of them violated the curfew rules.

The decision to end the curfew on Thursday came one day after the American Civil Liberties Union sued the city and county of Los Angeles and San Bernardino to end the curfew, saying it was an unconstitutional violation of freedom of expression.

At its height there were more than 1,000 guards in the Los Angeles area, some of whom were carrying M-4 rifles. Humvees and military trucks were in the city in a way we had not seen since 1994, in the days after the Northridge earthquake – and during the 1992 riots.

The bringing of the National Guard sparked criticism from councilor Markis Harris Dawson, who is part of southern Los Angeles. On May 31, he said, “Our real fear is that applying the additional law will only lead to more violence against people of color.”
