An earthquake strikes the village of Wales – Wales Online

People in Wales may have felt the earth moving yesterday after an earthquake in the north of the country was confirmed. The earthquake measured 1.0 on the Richter scale, and occurred at 6.43 am on Monday, April 4th. The epicenter was located two kilometers west of Trivereux in Conwy, according to the British Geological Survey, at a depth of 7 kilometers.

This was not the first earthquake to hit the British Isles in recent weeks. Days earlier on March 31, an earthquake measuring 0.5 on the Richter scale was recorded in Claddock in Herefordshire and on March 30 at Maplethrup in Lincolnshire it was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 1.1.

The last time a magnitude 1 earthquake hit northern Wales was Snowdonia during October 2021. Then communities in Conwy Valley and beyond heard a “big roar” – dogs awake and sofas shaking.

Some people suspected thunder, others attributed it to the passing of a large vehicle or a sound explosion. It was recorded at a depth of 6 km with the epicenter as “3 km north-northeast of Dolgarog village, Konoy”.

An earthquake measuring 1.0 on the Richter scale is considered a “small quake” and is relatively common in the UK. In September 2019, a 1.5 earthquake shook the village of Bedeglert in Gwynedd.

The richest scale is used worldwide to measure the strength of earthquakes. According to the scale, a measurement of about 3.0 degrees would be considered a slight tremor that would be felt if you were sitting normally.
