Do you have a business plan if a major earthquake struck Delhi, HC asks the AAP government
In the wake of several minor earthquakes in and around the national capital since April, the Delhi High Court asked the government, authorities of the AAP and the civilian authorities on Tuesday how prepared they would be if a major earthquake hit the city.
A court judge Vipin Sanghi and Rajnish Bhatnagar asked the Delhi government, the three municipal companies, the Assembly Council, the DDA and the New Delhi Municipal Council to provide written statements explaining the steps taken or proposed to take to ensure the safety of people in the event of a major earthquake.
The Council gave the Delhi government and civil authorities one week to file their declarations and was included in the hearing on June 15. The court also ordered the authorities to educate the public about the applicable action plan, if any, for their safety in the event of a major earthquake in Delhi. A detailed order from the court is awaited.

The order came at the request of the defenders Arbit Bhargava and D.K. Sharma claiming that the authorities and government of Delhi did nothing despite several directions from the court to develop an action plan.
In their request, they asked for directions to the Delhi government and civil bodies to develop an action plan in a time-bound manner. The request was made in the main Bhargava petition filed in 2015 claiming that the seismic stability of the buildings in Delhi was weak and in the event of a major earthquake there could be a large number of victims.

The petition is still pending before the Supreme Court, which from time to time directed the Delhi government and civil authorities to draw up an action plan. In application, Bhargava claimed that about 11 earthquakes had struck Delhi since April 12, and according to experts, a large earthquake was imminent, which is why he now moved to court for urgent guidance.
On Monday, the national capital was rocked by an earthquake, its epicenter in Gurugram, Haryana. This is the 13th time in two months that Delhi was hit by an earthquake.
“An earthquake measuring 2.1 on the Richter scale struck 13 km northwest of Gurugram, Haryana, at 1 pm today,” said the National Seismology Center.
I felt tremors in Delhi and Noida too.

On June 7, an earthquake measuring 1.3 on the Richter scale hit 23 km southeast of the Rohtak region of Haryana. On June 3, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram. The agency said that two moderate and 4.6 earthquakes struck Rohtak on May 29.
On May 15, Delhi was hit by an earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale, which hit 13 km northwest of New Delhi. Earlier on May 10, a moderate earthquake of magnitude 3.4 struck the capital, with the epicenter near Waziristan Northeast Delhi district.
The same area was the seismic foci of 3.5 and 2.7, respectively, that struck on April 12 and April 13.

With nearly 13 earthquakes hitting the Delhi-NCR region in two months, there were concerns if it was the precursor to a major wave, but experts say there is nothing unusual about this seismic activity. They stressed that although earthquakes are unpredictable, an appropriate disaster management plan must be developed to deal with any emergency.
The Delhi-NCR region is very strange with regard to seismic activities. It has many fault lines that generate earthquakes, but it also feels the impact of earthquakes centered around the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan and even in Nepal.

Delhi experienced a major earthquake in 1720 with a magnitude of 6.5. The last major earthquake was in the area near Bolandshahr in 1956 measuring 6.7, according to AK Shukla, who was head of the Seismology Center and the Seismological Risk Center of the Meteorology Department of India which was later taken under the newly formed National Seismology Center.
Shukla said that the recent earthquakes are not an unusual phenomenon because the Delhi-NCR region has many fault lines such as the Mahendrajdar-Dehradun fault. There are errors in Mathura, Moradabad and Sohna.
Earthquakes are not new to Delhi-NCR because of many fault lines. If one notices the earthquake pattern since the past two and a half months, it hit its highest level of 4.5 on May 29 (Rohtak). He said that since then it decreased.
