China confirms first human case of H3N8 avian influenza strain in Beijing
China has identified the first known human case of the H3N8 strain of bird flu, but health officials say the risk of widespread transmission among people is low.
H3N8 has been known to circulate since 2002 after its first appearance in North American waterfowl. It is known to infect horses, dogs and seals, but has not been detected in humans so far.
The Chinese National Health Commission said a 4-year-old boy living in central Henan province tested positive for the strain after being hospitalized for fever and other symptoms earlier this month.
The NHC said in a statement that the boy’s family raised chickens at home and lived in areas of wild ducks.
The boy was directly infected with birds, and the strain did not have “the ability to effectively infect humans,” the Commission said.
He added that a test of the boy’s close human contact found “no anomalies.”
The NHC said the juvenile case was “one-time cross-species transmission with a low risk of large-scale transmission.”
Nevertheless, he warned the general public to stay away from dead and sick birds and seek immediate treatment for fever and respiratory symptoms.
