Rabies fox attacked person, Autauga County pet, test shows
The Alabama Public Health Service has warned Alabama residents about rabies after a fox has attacked a person.
The incident took place on Monday near Wood Valley Ridge off US31 North between Prattville and the Interstate 65 interchange. The victim’s pet was also attacked.
ADPH then confirmed the results by testing and notified the exposed individuals. Pets are vaccinated against booster rabies. Additional tests are being done to determine the rabies strain.
This is the first confirmed case of rabies in Autauga County this year. Last year, two cats were confirmed positive in Prattville.
Dr. Dee W. Jones, a state public health veterinarian, said it is expected to be a raccoon strain, a major reservoir of rabies in terrestrial animals in Alabama. He states that wildlife species are not common in attacking people, but they occur because of the changes in mental status that the virus causes in animals.
Jones said that humans are rarely in direct contact, but livestock and pets are very common in wild ferocious animals. Alabama law requires that dogs, cats and ferrets older than 12 weeks be vaccinated against rabies. Rabies vaccine is also available for horses and other livestock, if recommended by a veterinarian.
Local residents are advised not to leave their pets free and to keep leftover pet food and scraps away from their homes. In addition, do not illegally feed or keep wildlife as pets, or approach wildlife or livestock that behave in strange or unusual ways. Children should avoid stray and wild animals, regardless of their behavior.
Autauga County Rabies Officer will provide discounted vaccinations at various locations throughout Autauga County on April 30 and May 7. Rabies vaccination costs $ 12 per animal.
