‘Just like an earthquake’: A man woke up from a car that crashed into his bedroom

Amrit Pal Singh was asleep in bed when he woke up to a car crashing into his bedroom door, heading straight towards him.

Emergency services were called for the accident on North Avon Road in the Richmond suburb of Christchurch around 3.50 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Pal Singh told the New Zealand Herald that the car stopped a short distance from where he was sleeping.

“I was screaming ‘get out, it’s an earthquake’ but then I saw the car. It was so horrible. I was shocked.”

The impact caused everything on its shelves to fall on top of it.

He tried to open the door to get the driver out, but he couldn’t, so he ran outside and called emergency services.

“I was shocked, I was just in a deep sleep. He removed all things from outside the room and damaged the bathroom, bedroom and living room.

“It felt like an earthquake.”

The car also damaged many of his belongings, including a laptop, watches, shoes and clothes.

“Everything is completely damaged. I don’t have insurance on any of them.”

Pal Singh lives with two others, Mohit Kaushal and Manish Jindal. He said their property manager is helping them find a new place to live.

He said that the driver of the car looked like a young man, about 19 or 20 years old.

He was initially unresponsive when Pal Singh tried to speak to him but eventually started to respond.

A witness to the accident told the Herald that he fell to the ground in three houses and heard the noise.

He went outside and heard the sound of the fire alarm and people coming out into the street. He saw a man on the phone with emergency services.

“It was just crazy. It’s not every day something like this happens.”

He and a few others started trying to help the driver of the car who was still inside.

“It was a bit unsafe, as things could fall off the roof, but I’ve never been in a situation like this before.”

The witness said he turned left but that the car behind him continued to drive straight into the house.
