Sacramento Republic hosts San Jose Earthquakes in the US Open Round of 16

Sacramento (KTXL) – The Sacramento Republic Football Club will host the San Jose Earthquakes for the US Open Cup Round of 16 on May 25 at Heart Health Park.

It will be the first time Republic FC has hosted an MLS opponent in the Round of 16, and it’s also the first time Sacramento has played at home on the tour.

The kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and tickets will officially go on sale on Friday, May 13.

The US Open is the longest running football tournament in America, as this year was the 107th edition of the tournament.

Republic FC is one of three remaining non-MLS clubs and one of two unaffiliated with the league hosting a Round of 16 match.

Sacramento’s third round tie in the club’s history secured their spot with a 2-0 win over Phoenix Rising 2-0 at home on Wednesday.

The Earthquakes currently have a 2-5-3 MLS record and are not winning on the road at 0-4.

As for Republic FC, they have a 4-2-3 record in the USL Championship Western Conference standings.

San Jose advanced to the last 16 after beating the Seattle Sounders on penalties on Wednesday evening. After a 1-1 draw, the Earthquakes overtook the Sounders to win on penalties, 10-9.

Both teams have played in the Open Cup in the past with previous matches being held in San Jose.

In a fourth-round match in 2019, Republic FC scored twice in the first 15 minutes, but the Earthquakes eventually recovered and won 4-3.

In 2014, the two teams played in the fourth round and that competition ended with Earthquakes winning 2-1. The following year, Republic and the Earthquakes went overtime in a 2-2 tie, but Sacramento fell in the eighth round of penalty shootouts.

Before Republic FC welcomes the Earthquakes to Sacramento, the indomitable club returns to the USL Championship on Wednesday on the road against El Paso Locomatovie FC.

Wednesday’s match is scheduled to start at 6 PM and will be broadcast live on FOX40.com, the FOX40 app, and on Antenna TV 40.2.
