Amid floods in the state, a light earthquake shakes Guwahati. There were no reports of injuries

In a shocking development, an earthquake was felt in Guwahati in Assam at around 9.48 pm on Sunday. Since it is an earthquake prone country, several small earthquakes have occurred in the past. Earthquakes in Northeast India

The National Center for Seismology said two earthquakes, with a magnitude of 3.5 and 3.8 on the Richter scale, struck parts of the northeastern region in January within 30 minutes. The first earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 2.11 am that day and the epicenter was in Kashar district in Assam state. The depth of the earthquake was 35 km. The second earthquake, measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 2.39 am and the epicenter was in the Kangbokbi district of Manipur. The nodal agency of the earthquake monitoring center said that the depth was 20 kilometers.

An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Kangbokpi on January 13. Three more tremors have hit different parts of Manipur since the start of the new year, including two on January 4th in Tamenglong and Chandel districts. Another was in Kamjung on January 16th.

Assam floods kill three

It comes on a day when severe floods in Assam affected 24,681 people in 94 villages across six districts. Heavy rains that washed away part of the road in Haflong district of Dima Hasao district in Assam, have killed three people including a woman.

The Assam Disaster Management Authority has reported that six districts including Cachar, Dhemaji, Hojai, Karbi Anglong West, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metro) have been affected by the floods. In a recent update, landslides were reported from 12 villages in Dima Hasao district and more than 80 homes were severely damaged. On Saturday May 14th, the PWD Road connecting Hogai and West Karpi Anglong sank under flood waters in Hogai District.
