Mexico confirms first case of monkeypox
Mexican health officials have identified the first known case of monkeypox in the country.
Mexican health officials confirmed the first known case of monkeypox in the country on Saturday in a 50-year-old US resident being treated in Mexico City.
The man, a permanent resident of New York City, was “probably infected in the Netherlands,” Health Secretary Hugo Lopez Gatel said on Twitter.
“Fortunately, he is stable and proactively isolated,” said Lopez Gatel. “I hope he recovers without complications.”
He did not provide information about the patient’s potential contact with others.

The two cases were clearly not connected.
Monkeypox virus can infect humans by infected animals. Human-to-human transmission is possible, but rare.
Monkeypox is associated with smallpox, but it is less serious. Early symptoms include high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a chickenpox-like rash.
There is no specific cure, but vaccination against smallpox has been found to be about 85% effective in preventing monkeypox.
