LKAB production is still declining two years after the Kiruna earthquake

In May 2020, LKAB’s iron ore mine in Kiruna, Sweden was hit by a strong earthquake. As High North News previously reported, the earthquake and subsequent rockslides reduced the mine’s production capacity.

In a press release, the Swedish Mining Company reported that restoration work in the area affected by the Kiruna mine has now been completed. The work is now entering the next phase, with initial production starting in the fall of 2022. This applies to Production Area 22, right in the middle of the mine.

The earthquake also triggered several rockslides in the mine, however, Production Area 22 – also known as Block 22 – was particularly hard hit.

The company writes that this area lags some behind other production areas and thus affects other parts of the mine’s production, where production forms a pattern.

“It will take time before we go into full production of the mine, however, we have good systems in place. This is a complex issue that remains high on the agenda and therefore needs to be allowed some time. Security is a major concern,” LKAB Kiruna Mining Chief Joel Kangas says in the statement. the key.

LKAB reports that mining production is around 66,000 tons per day and the outlook for the coming years looks the same. This equates to a 20% reduction in production.
