Andrew Coltart: LIV hit golf like an earthquake and threatens the entire fabric of the game

The Scotsman is part of the Sky Sports commentary on the 122nd US Open, which begins at The Country Club in a Boston suburb on Thursday.

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson were among the players to take part in the first $25 million Saudi Arabia-backed event in England last week, and Bryson Dechambeau and Patrick Reed also signed for the next event in Portland later in the month.

The PGA Tour has suspended members playing under the LIV Golf banner, and the DP World Tour is expected to announce next week what action it might take against the likes of Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter.

“This golf hit like an earthquake, causing a crack in the game on a scale we’ve never seen, or even imagined,” said Coultart, who hails from Thornhill in Dumfries and Galway. “It really threatens the entire fabric of the game.

“The backdrop to this week is a disgrace, because golf can really do with a period of relative calm. We’d all like to see a week of magic golf, with a great winner crowned at the end. Sadly, it appears to have been overshadowed by the entire LIV golf controversy.

“I was in Toronto last week for the Canadian Open and it was impossible to get away from this problem – both in the locker room and when commenting on Sky.

“And it seems a lot of goodwill in and around the game has suffered because of all of this. Fortunately guys like Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas show great respect for what Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and the rest have come up with, and this helps provide the right kind of balance.

“I just wonder how the DP World Tour would react. But I understand why they didn’t follow the lead of the PGA and issued an immediate ban. The threat of legal action is clear, and in America you only have one legal system to deal with.

The DP World tour spans across dozens of countries, in Europe and beyond, so it must be a nightmare to try to anticipate what the courts will decide.

“And what will happen to players who have signed with LIV, and suddenly find themselves redundant because the big names are making the switch? Where do they go from here if they are banned in the US and Europe? Will LIV continue to fund them if they don’t actually play?”
