Now driven by the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan after its withdrawal from the United States, the group is consolidating control of its territory with the goal of taking over the entire country and enforcing strict Sharia law. At the moment, Al Shabaab controls large areas of central and southern Somalia, but their reach is much more widespread, reducing control of the Somali government.
