New study: Use of non-humanoid robots to teach children with autism
RobotICs have been used as teaching materials for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but these interventions have often been expensive humanoids. In our research paper, we are investigating whether non-humanoid robots can function as teaching materials and reduce the workload of human special educators. Experiments by researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Bangalore’s Severe Handicap and Autism Academy (ASHA) show that non-humanoid toy robots actually help special educators in autism education. Showed that it has potential.
This paper was presented at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in 2021 in Xian, China. Currently, one of her lead authors, Nabanita Paul, has been awarded the IISc Murthy Govindaraju’s “Womenin Computer Science” Research Donation Award.
ASD is a developmental disorder caused by differences in the brain. People with ASD may act, communicate, interact, and learn differently than most other people. In the paper, the intervention focused on communication and total motor skills in children with ASD. This paper details three studies. A toy robot called Cozmo supports the oral lessons of special educators on the school grounds. The mini drone Tello helps special educators perform exercise lessons on the school grounds. Cozmo, special educators, and children with ASD connect remotely for oral lessons. The “Talk with Cosmo” session (20 children) included storytelling and subsequent story-related questions. “Exercise with Tello” (55 children) included basic lessons such as raising arms and crouching. “Learn With Cozmo Online” (7 children) included various aspects such as spelling and voice learning of three-letter words.
Researchers measured and compared learning outcomes with and without these interventions.
“All three studies show improved learning outcomes and reduced prompts from Ses (special educators), showing reduced workload,” the paper states.

“Our results show that children spent more time on online intervention lessons with Cozmo, suggesting that the use of robots should also be considered when designing online interventions. In addition, an analysis of Cozmo’s role revealed that co-teachering Cozmo increased children’s spontaneous interactions. “
