Treatment of type 2 diabetes Semaglutide may also treat obesity

Semaglutide is a traditional type 2 diabetes drug that may help obese people lose weight, especially when given in high doses.

At 3 and 6 months, high-dose semaglutide has been suggested to be clinically effective in weight loss in overweight and obese patients, consistent with previous studies from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). During the trial, the study authors noted that all patients recorded an average weight loss of 6.7 kg (5.9%). Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist and is approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes by subcutaneous injection once weekly at low doses of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg or 1 mg. Previous randomized clinical trials have shown that it may also lead to weight loss in patients.

Based on this, the researchers wanted to see if different doses of semaglutide could treat obesity.

Researchers evaluated 175 patients receiving semaglutide prescriptions. Of the participants, 82 (50.9%) were confirmed to be class 3 obese. [49.1%]). Additionally, 18 participants had his type 2 diabetes.

The researchers administered the highest doses of semaglutide (1.7 and 2.4 mg) subcutaneously to 77 patients and 98 to lower doses of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg. At 3 months, the group taking the highest dose achieved an average weight loss of 6.9%, while the group taking the lower dose achieved 5.1%.

Only 102 participants participated in the 6-month follow-up, at which time high-dose participants experienced an average weight loss of 12.1%, a 2.9% increase over the low-dose group.
