State holds bird flu briefing for Okanagan small poultry owners – Kelowna Capital News
After an outbreak of bird flu at Spallumcheen’s O’Keefe Ranch nearly 100 birds had to be killed, the BC government will hold an information session for small flock poultry owners.
The outbreak was declared by Canadian Food Inspection Agency on 18 September, The bird is non-poultry, meaning that the bird was used for reasons other than the production of animal products.
This outbreak follows one of many after the federally regulated disease avian influenza (H5N1) began spreading around the world, with the first occurring in the northern Okanagan on April 13 BC. A case has been reported.
Now, the State of Kelowna has invited government veterinary experts to educate poultry owners of Kelowna’s small flocks about the avian flu virus, how to protect their flocks, and the potential impact if their birds get sick. We are talking about how to prepare for
Participants will learn about:
• Improve flock or farm biosecurity to prevent disease outbreaks.
• How to recognize signs of avian influenza and report cases.
• How foreign animal disease regulations affect small poultry.
• What to expect if a flock is positive for avian influenza.When
• Resources available to non-profit bird owners, including diagnostic services from the BC Animal Health Center.
The session will take place on Thursday, September 29th from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm in Reed Hall.
