Lawmakers press Air Force for final decision on US Space Command

A final decision must be based on the imperative to deal with rapidly evolving threats in space, the Colorado senators said in a letter.

WASHINGTON Colorados senators in a Sept. 27 to Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall argue that a final basic decision on U.S. Space Command must be made as soon as possible in light of the Ukrainian conflict and the China’s expansion in the Pacific

The letter marks another push by Colorado lawmakers to rescind the Air Force Department’s January 2021 recommendation that Space Command, currently located at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, move to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.

A final decision must be based on the imperative to deal with rapidly evolving threats in space, the letter signed by the Sens states. Michael Bennet (R) and John Hickenlooper (R).

US Space Command is responsible for providing satellite services to the US military and protecting these assets from foreign threats.

The basic decision was reviewed by the Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense and the Government Accountability Office. Neither review found anything improper in the basic process, but the IG asked the Secretary of Defense to consider concerns expressed by senior military officials that moving Space Command would not would not achieve full operational capability, or FOC, as quickly as remaining. at Peterson.

The SecDef agreed and said it would ask the Secretary of the Air Force to conduct a review of the concerns regarding the USSPACECOM FOC and take whatever action the SECAF deems appropriate, the IG said in his report.

Gen. James Dickinson, commander of US Space Command, said last month he expected the Air Force Department to issue a decision in the near future.

Dickinson said Space Command, created in August 2019, was trying to surrender to the FOC but needed a basic decision to be finalized in order to move forward. The FOC requires that the headquarters be fully staffed and have a permanent location.

Bennet and Hickenlooper point out that reports from the DoD IG and GAO indicate that senior military officials have proposed the renovation of Building 1 at Peterson Space Force Base in order to reach the FOC more quickly and cheaply than a whole new building.
