Comedian and talk show host Trevor Noah has announced he is leaving satirical news program ‘The Daily Show’ after seven years, The New York Times reported. Previously working as a correspondent for the programme, he took over as host in 2015, succeeding Jon Stewart. He made the announcement Thursday in a statement. We laughed together, we cried together. But after seven years, I feel like it’s time,” he said. He added that he realized there was another part of my life that I wanted to continue to explore.”
Describing his experience on the show as “absolutely amazing”, he said “it’s something I never expected. I found myself thinking throughout everything we’ve been through. Comedy Central, the network behind the show, said it had been working with Noah for a long time to figure out how he could handle his demanding schedule.
Noah’s tenure on ‘The Daily Show’ has been widely praised for his biting and amusing takes on issues as varied as Donald Trump’s US presidency, the Covid-19 pandemic and other events of significance. He received a Primetime Emmy Award (in the Outstanding Short Form Variety Series category) and a Peabody Award.
Originally from South Africa, Noah was born on February 20, 1984 in Johannesburg. Her father is Swiss-German and her mother Patricia Nombuyiselo is of Xhosa ethnicity. Noah’s experience and his beginnings in South Africa during the apartheid era greatly influenced his comedy.
Noah’s predecessor, Jon Stewart, hosted the show from 1999 to 2015, himself taking over from Craig Kilborn, who was the show’s original host from 1996 to 1998.
It’s unclear who will be Noah’s successor on the show, but judging by Noah’s precedent, Malaysian comedian and senior correspondent Ronny Chieng could fit the bill.
