5.3-magnitude earthquake hits Eastern Samar – Manila Bulletin

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook eastern Samar and neighboring provinces late on Monday night, October 24, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolks said the quake struck 46 km northeast of Mercedes at 11:08 p.m. on Monday.

She said the quake was felt at intensity 4 (medium strength) in Mercedes, General MacArthur, Giborlos, Guyuan, Hernani, Quinabondan and Salcedo in eastern Samar.

Strong or weak earthquake was also felt in Balangiga and Lawaan in East Samar and Tacloban City.

Meanwhile, she “felt a bit” at Intensity II in Abuyog, Dulag and Palo in Leyte.

The Phivolcs also recorded tremors at Intensity III in Borongan, Dulag and Hilongos in Leyte; Intensity II at Abuyog and Alangalang in Leyte; and Intensity I in Baybay City, Albuera and Javier in Leyte, Sogod, Southern Leyte and Surigao City.

The earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by active fault movement near the area.

Phivolks advised the public to remain alert as aftershocks may occur.
