Vanuatu earthquake: A powerful 5.4-magnitude earthquake strikes the so-called ‘ring of fire’

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Vanuatu on Sunday morning.

According to the Australian Government of Geosciences, the earthquake in the South Pacific had a depth of 27 kilometers.

The earthquake occurred at 7.34 am on Sunday (local time) approximately 72 kilometers off the west coast of Vanuatu.

The islands of Vanuatu suffer frequent earthquakes located on both sides of the “Pacific Ring of Fire”.

The Ring of Fire is a seismically active 40,000 km long region where the different plates of the Earth’s crust meet.

Nearly 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur within this region, according to National Geographic.

The tectonic plates that make up the Ring of Fire are constantly moving, meaning that they sometimes collide and cause an earthquake.

The ring also contains 75 percent of all active volcanoes on Earth, for a total of 452.
