Breast cancer: women with benign cysts, lumps are at higher risk
A study found that women screened for benign breast disease almost doubled their risk of developing breast cancer. Women with benign breast disease, including fibroadenomas and cysts, were compared with women without diagnosed breast disease. More than 700,000 Spanish women participated in a breast screening program. This study was presented at the 13th European Breast Cancer Congress.
By 2017, 17,827 of the women surveyed had been diagnosed with benign breast disease, of which 11,708 had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and researchers were tracking women’s health.
To reliably detect individuals with early-onset cancer who have the best chances of survival, researchers believe that this group of women could benefit from more regular screening. The risk of breast cancer remained high for at least 20 years.

The study included 778,306 women aged 50 to 69 years who underwent at least one breast screening at one of 20 centers in Spain between 1996 and 2015. All Spanish women in this age group undergo breast cancer mammography every two years.
Data show that about 25 out of 1,000 women with benign breast disease were diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer diagnoses were made in approximately 15 per 1,000 women without benign breast disease.

Women of all ages were at increased risk, and the risk persisted for at least 20 years after benign breast disease. Comparing women with 12 to 20 years of follow-up to those with less than 4 years of follow-up, the latter group was 99% more likely to have a breast cancer diagnosis.
According to Dr. Marta Román of Barcelona’s Del Mar Hospital, the study argues that benign breast disease is an important sign that women are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. In practice, cancer often develops in one breast after a benign disease is found in the other breast.
