Interstate 395 south of Bridgeport closed for the fifth night

For less than six hours on Friday the 13th, traffic was escorted on Interstate 395 between Lee Vining and Bridgeport.

The last escort was conducted at 5 p.m. when strong winds and whitewashed conditions caused them to stall, shutting down the highway south of Gardnerville for another night.

“Due to strong winds and blackout conditions on the highway, Caltrans has extended its closure of US Route 395 in Mono County,” the California Department of Transportation reported Friday. The highway is currently closed from… June Lake Junction to the town of Bridgeport.

With more inclement weather set to arrive today, Opportunity 395 will remain closed south of Gardnerville.

A Winter Storm Warning until Tuesday morning is in effect along the highway until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, “Multiple storms will be moving through this weekend and early next week.” “Heaviest snowfall and wider impacts are expected today and Monday with a brief lull in intensity on Sunday. Travel will be very risky, especially today and Monday.”

Snow accumulations of 6 to 16 inches can be seen along Trail 395 south of Walker, 3-5 feet above 8,000 feet.

Interstate 6 in Bishop, which connects to Nevada Interstate 95, is open as a bypass for vehicles heading into Bridgeport or further north. All of the Sierra passes south of Interstate 88, including Ebbetts, Sonora, and Tioga, all of which are closed for the season.

Friday marks the fifth consecutive night the highway has been closed since Jan. 9 after another storm dumped snow and debris on the highway.

At worst Monday, the highway 17 miles north of Bishop to Bridgeport was closed. Flooding from that storm also closed Interstate 6 from Bishop to Coaldale, Nevada, resulting in the cancellation of a major turn for about three hours.

A 3.4 earthquake was reported at 7:06 p.m. Friday near Morgan Mill Road in Walker, California, along Interstate 395, by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Eight people reported feeling the quake, most of them living near the areas, with one report in Glenbrook and another in Watsonville, California.
