The Japan Meteorological Agency has added long-range seismic motion, which shakes tall buildings badly during quakes, to the range of its earthquake early warning system starting at noon on Wednesday.

So far, the warning system has been triggered in areas where a conventional earthquake is expected to score 4 or higher on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7.

The warning will now also be issued to areas where such damage from long-term seismic tremors is expected.
