New downtown exhibit compares Winnipeg’s COVID-19 response to Spanish flu – Winnipeg
A new exhibit in downtown Winnipeg compares the city’s response to the 2020 COVID-19 virus to the Spanish flu that swept the world in 1918.
It is located in the Millennium Center and is operated daily through March 31st by Heritage Winnipeg. Jim Smith, president and historian of the Northeast Winnipeg Historical His Society, said:
Smith worked on this project, turning to old Winnipeg papers for clues to a time when World War I, not the pandemic, was front page news.
“So, at the top, you have something like, ‘Allies advance 200 yards.’ So it was actually neglected. “
The Spanish flu infected an estimated 750 million people worldwide. Multimedia exhibits detail Winnipeg’s response to both, from lockdowns to misinformation to healthcare.
“I’ve heard stories from my grandfather. He said he was 11 years old when the Spanish Flu started,” Smith said.
“As a Boy Scout, he helped deliver food to people’s homes. .
According to Cindy Tugwell of Heritage Winnipeg, this shows how little was known about the virus before it was understood.
“There was no vaccine, no modern conveniences. Their health care was still overwhelmed, hospitals were overcrowded.
This part of the exhibit immerses viewers in the knowledge of other pandemics throughout history, and designer Jeremy Choi said the idea was to really bring the information to life.
“We understand the content and find the best ways to prototype and develop the best user experience, so that our visitors are educated at the same time and entertained at the same time. It was to perhaps change their perspectives and initial opinions about what they had by gaining more knowledge from
For Tagwell, it was important to continue the conversation that pandemics are inevitable and consider how people can better prepare.
“Not just physically, but mentally, social connections and the reason we are here today are important to our overall health. Takeout is a good time, don’t stop planning, don’t stop talking about things so you’ll be prepared when bad times come.”

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
