FDA approves RSV vaccine. what now?

Harrisonburg, Va. (WHSV) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first-ever RSV vaccine for adults 60 and older.
Arexvy is a recumbent vaccine. Christie Gray, director of the Immunization Division at the Virginia Department of Health, explained that recumbent vaccines use inert particles of the virus to help improve the body’s immunity to the virus.
The vaccine has been approved by the FDA and will now enter Phase 2 of approval.
“Now the CDC [Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices] ACIP reviews the information and decides who should be vaccinated, when, how often and what considerations are based on clinical guidance,” Gray said.
The ACIP plans to meet in June on the issue, Gray said. Details on vaccine availability will be revealed after the conference.
As for Virginia, he said last month that the state is averaging 15 RSV infections per week across all age groups. This contrasts with the 1,000 infections per week recorded during the peak of RSV infections in October 2022.
As he prepares for the upcoming RSV season, Gray said he’s excited to have an additional “toolbox” to help patients fight the virus.
He also noted that vaccines for other age groups are in development.
