A tsunami warning has been canceled following a powerful earthquake off the Alaska Peninsula

A tsunami warning was lifted late Saturday after a powerful earthquake struck off the Alaska Peninsula.

The 7.2-magnitude quake struck about 60 miles south of Sand Point at 10:48 p.m. Saturday and several aftershocks followed, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

He issued a tsunami warning for the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island. Sirens sounded in communities, as officials urged residents to seek higher ground. The tsunami warning level was later downgraded to a warning and completely canceled by 1 a.m. Sunday.

The National Tsunami Warning Center said the maximum wave height observed off King Cove and Sand Point was half a foot. She said some areas may continue to see small changes in sea level.

The tsunami warning also alarmed Anchorage residents late Saturday, with some reporting that they got an emergency alert on their phones.

Geologists have previously said that an earthquake is unlikely to cause a large tsunami in Anchorage. The Tsunami Warning Center has had problems in the past with sending out alerts to residents of the city.

At 11:32 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service posted on Twitter: “Anchorage is not in the area affected by a tsunami warning. We will look into this matter.”
