THACHAPI, Calif. (KERO) — 71 years ago, dust settled from a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that destroyed the town of Tehachapi.

The earthquake caused massive devastation in the town and left 12 people dead, including nine children. In addition to the fatalities, 18 people were injured and an estimated $50 million in damage occurred.

The Tehachapi Heritage Museum contains many preserved artifacts, photos, and stories from the earthquake, which was the fifth largest in California history.

An earthquake ripped along the White Wolf Volt line, causing the quake, at 4:52 a.m. on July 21, 1952. One month later, a magnitude 5.8 aftershock devastated downtown Bakersfield.
