Rockland shaken by earthquake | Rockland County Times

At approximately 10:19 a.m. on April 5, a flash earthquake measuring 4.8 struck near Lebanon, New Jersey, triggering tremors that were felt throughout Rockland County.

According to CNN, reports of tremors felt by the public were reported throughout the Hudson Valley and Northeast, from Philadelphia to New York City.

Many Rocklanders marked the occasion by gathering at Indian Rock in the village of Montebello to observe a famous crack in an 8- to 12-billion-year-old piece of granite, which some claimed was caused by the earthquake. Stories abound on social media, and very briefly on Rockland Times.com, that the landmark had been damaged by the quake, but further investigation provided scant evidence that the natural phenomena had a measurable impact on Indian Rock.

Ramapo Police told RCT that Indian Rock had cracked long before the earthquake as documented in photos of the local landmark taken in 2019.

Montebello Mayor Lance Milmian also said Indian Rock has always been subdivided in a statement shared with Lo-Hud, though he also stated that village engineers were conducting a survey to confirm the impact of earthquakes on the rocks, or lack thereof.

Despite doubts expressed by local officials, some village residents believe that the tremors they felt last Friday led to the widening of the existing fissure. As of press time, no one has definitively solved the case.
