Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis – At approximately 10:43 a.m. local time, today (May 8, 2024), a large earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua and Barbuda, and Guadeloupe. The epicenter of the earthquake was determined at latitude: 16.854, longitude: -61.545, and at a depth of 10.0 km.

The earthquake was felt prominently in the following nearby cities:

44 km southeast of Saint John, Antigua and Barbuda, 67 km north of Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, 74 km east of Prades, Montserrat

Despite the severity of the earthquake, Mr. Abdias Samuel, National Disaster Coordinator for St. Kitts and Nevis, reported no damage so far in St. Kitts and Nevis or any of the neighboring islands.

Mr. Samuel urges citizens and residents to remain vigilant and advises them to contact the relevant authorities to obtain any necessary information about disaster preparedness.
