Avian flu infects dairy cows, FDA asks some states to restrict raw milk sales

H5N1 avian flu As the virus spreads through dairy cows, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is urging states to take further steps to protect the public from the risks of raw milk.
In an open letter posted on its website Thursday, the agency called on states to do more to warn the public about the dangers of raw milk and to test cows that produce raw milk for sale.
The FDA also recommended that states use their regulatory authority to halt the sale of raw milk in their states or areas where dairy farmers test positive.
On Thursday, Minnesota became the 10th state to do so. Reporting an infected flockAccording to the US Department of Agriculture, 82 herds in the US have tested positive for the H5N1 virus.
While the FDA does not allow the sale of raw milk across state lines, some states do allow the sale of raw milk for human consumption within their state, with various requirements. Some states understand that what you do with milk at home is a personal choice, and allow raw milk to be sold as pet food labeled “Not for Human Consumption.”
Raw milk may contain high concentrations of the H5N1 avian influenza virus, which is thought to be transmitted through the cow's udder. It is not yet known whether drinking contaminated milk can cause avian influenza infection. However, cats living on farms with infected cows have died after drinking unpasteurized milk, and three dairy farmers have been informed that they are infected. Workers who were exposed to raw milk became infected.
“Given the current and potential future risks that the HPAI H5N1 virus poses to our nation's public health and the health of our nation's food animals and wildlife, it is important that we work together to minimize additional exposure to humans and other animal species,” wrote Dr. Don Prater, acting director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, who leads the agency's H5N1 response effort.
Besides bird flu, FDA points out health risks to raw milk These include illness, miscarriage, stillbirth, kidney failure and death.
In addition to issuing stronger warnings about the dangers of consuming raw milk, the FDA is asking states to monitor dairy herds for signs of illness that could indicate H5N1 avian influenza virus infection and to instruct farms to safely discard milk from sick cows.
The FDA said raw milk or raw dairy products from contaminated cows must be heat-treated or pasteurized if they are to be fed to calves or other animals.
The FDA also Calling on each state Conduct surveillance testing for the presence of H5N1 virus in dairy herds that may be engaged in raw milk production and report the results to state and federal regulatory authorities.
The agency said it plans to release new research and data on avian influenza viruses in raw milk and raw dairy products soon.
