I never really liked seeing the keffiyeh worn casually as a fashion statement. Given that it was a Jewish neighborhood, and given that there had been recent attacks on Jewish boys nearby, and given the number of anti-Israel stickers, posters of torn hostages, horrible slanderous signs, murderous slogans and chants that we all must have seen in every city. center and campus of the country, I was just fed up.
She caught me looking at her disapprovingly and made a hostile gesture. I asked her if she knew she couldn't wear what she wore under the regimes she celebrated with her keffiyeh.
Moments later, she was yelling at me about how much she hated Zionists, laughing when I said that Jews were trying to prevent another Holocaust, and insisting that she could wear what she wore in Gaza.
I felt it was a grim but timely reminder: Jews are right to be mortally offended by the keffiyeh. And so should everyone else.
