Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits Cagayan, Northern Samar

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 to 5.1 struck Cagayan and Northern Samar over the weekend, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Based on the information of Earthquake No. 2 from Phivolcs Institute, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Dalobiri Island, Calayan, Cagayan at 6:29 p.m. on July 6, and was of tectonic origin at a depth of 3 km.

Its exact location is reported to be 19.14 degrees north and 121.16 degrees east – 006 km north and 57 degrees west of Dalobire Island.

The earthquake's intensity was determined in different parts of Cagayan – intensity 3 was felt in Claveria while intensity 2 was felt in Lasam.

The intensity of the second instrument was monitored in Claveria, Cagayan.

Meanwhile, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Lope de Vega, Northern Samar at 12:01 a.m. on July 7.

The Phivolcs Institute reports that it is tectonic in nature and is 80 kilometers deep.

Its exact location is 12.38°N and 124.60°E – 010 km north and 13°W of Lope de Vega.

Lope De Vega, Catarman, Bobon, Mondragon, Palapag, San Roque, Pambujan, San Jose, Rosario, Lavezares, San Isidro, Victoria, Silvino Lobos, Catubig in Northern Samar and Calbayog City and Sta. Margarita in Samar have been placed under intensity 4.

Allen, Lawang, Mapanas, Jamay, Labinig and Kabul in Northern Samar; Archie, San Policarpo, Dolores, Oras, Canavid, Taft, San Julian and Salt in Eastern Samar; Gandara, Tarangan and Calbayog City under intensity 3; and San Jorge, Musching, Paranas, Binapacdao, Calibigga and Villarreal in Samar.

Santa Rita and Basi in Samar, Borongan City, Maidulong, Llorente and Hernani in Eastern Samar, Tacloban City, Papatungon and San Miguel in Leyte were placed under intensity 2.

The agency said no damage had been reported but aftershocks were expected.
