Earthquake today: 3.5 magnitude quake hits Chamoli district of Uttarakhand

An earthquake struck Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state on Sunday evening with its epicentre near the town of Joshimath. The quake measured 3.5 on the Richter scale and occurred amid heavy rains and landslides in the area. No casualties were reported.

The National Center for Earthquakes confirmed that an earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred on July 7 at 9:31 p.m.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 11 km from the city of Joshimath – at latitude 30.60 north and longitude 79.45 east, and at a depth of five kilometers.

Data released by the National Meteorological Department also indicates that earthquakes struck Afghanistan (magnitude 4.4) and Pakistan (magnitude 4.7) earlier on Sunday. This development also comes two days after a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Leh in Ladakh.

The earthquake comes at a time when Uttarakhand is reeling from heavy rains. The Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rains in several parts of the state till July 10. The Chardam flight was temporarily suspended on Sunday in view of the forecast.

Two pilgrims from Hyderabad were killed on Saturday after huge boulders fell on them from a hillside following a landslide in Karnaprayag in Chamoli district. Rivers were also in overflowing with the Alaknanda river flowing close to the danger mark at Vishnu Prayag near Joshimath.

Meanwhile, the state disaster response force has issued an alert to travellers as the water level in the Ganges river in Rishikesh saw a sharp rise on Sunday.

“The water level was expected to rise earlier. We are in constant touch with the administration and departments concerned. The police are also taking preventive measures. People living near the river bank have been displaced. Efforts are being made to prevent people from visiting the river banks,” the Dehradun Rural Police Chief told ANI.
