Aruna among the top favorites for the Olympic Games
Based According to his current world ranking, Nigeria's Quadri Aruna is expected to be released in the first round of the men's singles event at the 2024 Paris Olympics as the table tennis draw approaches.
Aruna and Egypt's Omar Assar are among the 16 highest-ranked players who have qualified for this year's event.
Aruna, who made history as the first African to reach the quarter-finals of table tennis at the 2016 Rio Olympics, is currently ranked 19th in the world, while Assar, the second African to reach the quarter-finals, is ranked 22nd in the world.
The official draw for the Games will be based on the ITTF world rankings as of July 16.
According to the African Table Tennis Federation, the two African stars are among the highest-ranked players and are expected to kick off their tournament in the second round (round of 64) on July 28 at the South Paris Arena.
All eyes are on Aruna and Assar. The Nigerian is making his fourth appearance at the Olympic Games and is fighting for a podium finish in Paris.
Another Nigerian who will be competing with Aruna in the men's singles is Olajide Omotayo.
In the women's event, the Nigerian duo Offiong Edem and Fatimo Bello, together with Cameroonians Sarah Hanffou and Algerian Lynda Loghraibi, will complete the continent in Paris.
Other African players in the men's singles are Mehdi Boulussa of Algeria and Ibrahima Diaw of Senegal. Madagascar's Fabio Rakotoarimanana will make history as the first player from the island to compete in the table tennis event at the Olympics. Saheed Idowu of Congo Brazzaville has also secured a triple invitation to compete in Paris.
