Chandipura virus: Six suspected children die in Gujarat in five days
As many as six children have died in Gujarat due to suspected Chandipura virus infection in the last five days, taking the total number of suspected cases to 12, state Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said on Monday.
Chandipura virus causes fever and acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) with flu-like symptoms. The pathogen belongs to the genus Vesiculovirus in the family Rhabdoviridae. The virus is transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks and sandflies.
“Of the 12 patients, four are from Sabarkantha district, three from Aravalli district, one each from Mahisagar and Kheda districts. Two are from Rajasthan and one from Madhya Pradesh. They were treated in Gujarat. Six deaths have been reported in the state due to suspected Chandipura virus, but until the test results of the samples are available it will be clear whether it was due to Chandipura virus or not,” Patel said.
“Five of the six deaths were reported from a government hospital in Himmatnagar, Sabarkantha district. All 12 samples, including eight from Sabarkantha, have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for confirmation,” he said.
A paediatrician at a civil hospital in Himmatnagar suspected that the Chandipura virus may have been the cause of the deaths of four children on July 10 and sent samples to NIV for confirmation. Four more children at the hospital subsequently showed similar symptoms.
“Chandipura virus is not contagious. However, thorough surveillance is being carried out in the affected areas and we have tested 18,646 people residing in 4,487 houses. The health department is working round the clock to prevent the spread of the disease,” Patel said.
