UNR seeks $21 million in innovation grant funding

The Biden-Harris Administration, through the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, announced that the Nevada Lithium Battery and Other EV Materials Loop Consortium, led by the University of Nevada, Reno in the Carson City-Reno area, has been designated one of 31 inaugural Tech Hubs in regions across the U.S. with rapid growth potential in key technology areas.

The EDA will select projects to receive Nevada Tech Hub funding and award an estimated $21 million in grants, which will be finalized in the coming months.

The investment is expected to support business creation, jobs, innovation and career pathways in rural Nevada, particularly rural areas within the USDA Rural Partner Network, which includes Nye, Esmeralda and Mineral Counties.

The five community networks are:

Southern Nevada: Nye and Esmeralda Counties

Sierra Region: Lyon and Mineral Counties

Moapa Valley: Clark County, northern and central communities

Southern Clark County: Communities in Southeast Clark County

Nevada 95-80 Community Development: Humboldt and Pershing Counties

The Nevada Tech Hub aims to position the Silver State as a powerhouse in the critical lithium supply chain and an ideal location for the nation’s future sustainable electrified storage industry.

This month, the EDA recommended the tech hub to receive grant funding to implement the following projects:

Collaborate with community colleges, state agencies, industry and labor unions to strengthen the region's skilled labor pool.

Providing educational opportunities and comprehensive support for students at the secondary and tertiary levels

Increase visibility of STEM-related careers across Nevada’s lithium economy, increase retention of Native students in STEM-related fields, and create pathways to family-sustaining jobs within the growing HUB workforce.

Support the administrative capacity and readiness of Nevada's Native American and Indigenous communities and promote their ability to work productively with industry.

Establishing and maintaining effective and fair management and decision-making processes, advising on workforce development strategies, and facilitating connections with relevant professionals and organizations

To ensure the Tech Hub’s impact benefits the entire region, the Consortium is working to develop equitable workforce training and recruitment strategies, including collaborating with the University of Nevada, Linus, Office of Indigenous Relations and a Nevada Native American Center initiative to support Native and Indigenous participation in key decisions.
