Google to announce new Pixel Fold when Pixel 9 launches in August

Google has revealed that its Pixel 9 launch event on August 13 will begin at 10am PST. The Pixel 9 series will include Google's next foldable smartphone, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, though it's unclear how much more “pro” it will be than the original Pixel Fold. The launch is scheduled for about a month before Apple's iPhone 16 is scheduled to go on sale.

Google revealed the Pixel 9's release date via an X (formerly Twitter) post, which also included a word search full of “reasons to break up with your phone” (at first glance, words like “screenshot,” “email,” “cost,” and “pogs” were found).

The event invite specifically mentioned the Pixel 9 Pro, with a link to a site that mentioned only that phone and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, confirming rumors that Google is working on another version of its foldable phone, the Google Pixel Fold, which will launch in June 2023. Presumably, with Pro added to the title, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be more feature-rich than its predecessor.

The post makes no mention of the standard Pixel 9 model, but it would be interesting if Google doesn't release it on the same day — it could simply be that the company wants to hype up its flagship smartphone before its release.

In any case, the X post also linked to Google's site, which featured a teaser photo showing off a different look for the Pixel 9 family. Gone is the back-spanning “visor” look from the Pixel 6, in favor of a wide, pill-shaped camera block with just three cameras jutting out from the back of the phone. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a total of four cameras split across two rows, but the camera block is also rounded.

Additionally, the Pixel 9 Pro's sides are flat, in keeping with the iPhone trend of the past few years, evolving from the rounded edges of previous Pixel phones. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold's sides are not visible, but it looks similar to the Pixel 9 Pro. However, the rounded edges of the cover screen are more pronounced, and it appears to be housed in a metal frame that was hidden by the Pixel Fold's black layer between the screen and the hinge.

Google tends to tease its products before they're released, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see the company's new smartphone unveiled before the August 13 launch date, but we'll have to wait and see if other devices are announced next month.
