2024 Olympics: India men's table tennis team to play opening match against China, Manika Batra to play teenager
The Indian men’s table tennis team faces a huge challenge as they will be taking on four-time gold medallist China in the opening round of the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, the women’s team will be taking on Romania in the round of 16. They could face Rio 2016 silver medallist Germany in the second round. Notably, India has qualified for team events in table tennis for the first time. On the other hand, China has won the gold medal in the men’s event in all the editions since the introduction of team events in the Olympics in 2008.
In the women's singles, star paddler Manika Batra, seeded 18th, will begin her campaign against Anna Hursey, a teenager from Great Britain.
Manika, who is competing in her third Olympic Games after making her debut in Rio 2016, reached the third round in the women's singles at Tokyo 2020. Hursey, on the other hand, is making her Olympic debut.
Another Indian, Sreeja Akula, is seeded 16th and will face Sweden's Christina Kallberg in her round of 64 match.
In the men's singles, the experienced Sharath Kamal, who is participating in the Olympic Games for the fifth time this year, will face the 27-year-old Slovenian Deni Kozul in the opening round.
Harmeet Desai will start his campaign in the preliminary round. Desai will face Zaid Abo Yaman from Jordan on July 27.
The preliminary round in men's and women's singles consists of three matches. The winners of the preliminary round qualify for the round of 64.
If Harmeet wins the preliminary round, he will face world number 5, Felix Lebrun.
The table tennis competitions at the Paris Olympics will take place from July 27 to August 10.
All five competitions (men's singles, women's singles, mixed doubles, men's team and women's team) are played at the South Paris Arena.
