North West cricketers gain national coaching experience
Cricket is a fast growing sport in Northwest British Columbia
Regional cricketers were visited a few weeks ago by the bowling coach of the Canadian national cricket team.
Khurram Chohan, himself a former national team member, provided tips and assessed prospects on the new pitch recently installed at the Thornhill Community Grounds.
His visit came via the Northwest BC Cricket Association, a new athletic presence in the region with more than 80 players on teams in Prince Rupert, Terrace, Thornhill and Kitimat. A team from Smithers could soon join as well.
According to Kam Siemens, chairman of the association, Chohan's visit was a result of the association's founding and the growing presence of the sport in the region.
“They were both impressed by the achievements our association has managed to achieve in such a short time,” said Siemens, referring to the provincial cricket association.
“With Cricket Canada recently competing in the T20 tournament in the US, we were able to ask the president of Cricket Canada, who is from British Columbia, if there was an opportunity to invite the coach or assistant coach to give our athletes some more insight.”
“We've emphasized how much potential talent we have in our area and how we need guidance to take them to the next level. The assistant coach did mention that there are a few athletes who show a lot of promise and who may be asked to participate in the high-performance camps,” she said.
The Thornhill Field replaces the asphalt parking lot on Medeek Avenue in Terrace as the playing field.
Players at the temple used a weighted tennis ball, rather than the standard hard ball made of leather with a cork inside, for safety reasons. However, at the new location, they can now go back to the hard ball.
The field will be officially opened on August 10 at 1:00pm at the Thornhill Community Grounds in the presence of representatives and players from the association, the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District and others.
The Prince Rupert club is also actively seeking a more permanent cricket ground. Siemans recently presented to Prince Rupert council seeking the city's assistance.
Rupert's cricketers currently play on the Roosevelt School baseball field.
