The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting no new cases of measles this week, but is urging parents to make sure their children's vaccinations are up to date before school starts in September.

“Now is the perfect time to make sure your children are up to date on vaccinations, including the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella,” said Jessica Munro, epidemiologist and vaccine-preventable disease supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Health.

On July 25, MDH confirmed three cases of measles in unvaccinated children, two of whom required hospitalization and are currently recovering at home. What concerns epidemiologists is that none of these cases have a history of international travel or contact with anyone who has traveled to areas where measles has not been eliminated.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that results in hospitalization of nearly half of those infected. Early symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes. A rash appears that starts on the head and spreads to other parts of the body. It usually takes 8 to 12 days from contact with a person with measles for the first symptoms to appear. The first symptoms are usually a runny nose, cough, or bloodshot eyes, followed by a fever. The measles rash typically appears 2 to 3 days after the fever begins.
Measles cases on the rise again this year
The Centers for Disease Control is currently 13 measles outbreaks tracked So far this year, three or more cases are considered an outbreak; last year there were only four such outbreaks.
Minnesota has reported 16 cases so far in 2024, while Wisconsin and South Dakota have reported one each. Illinois leads the state in the upper Midwest with 67 cases. Of the reported cases nationwide, 85% of patients are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination status, according to the CDC.
Vaccination is key
Minnesota law requires that children receive five vaccinations before entering kindergarten: diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP), measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), hepatitis B, and chickenpox.
According to state records and CDC data, only 87% of Minnesota kindergarteners received the MMR vaccine in 2023, the most recent year for which data is available.
“Access to health care during the pandemic and parents not having access to primary care is certainly a contributing factor,” Munro said. “We're also seeing misinformation being spread in Minnesota that's targeted at parents, and we're actively addressing that every day.”
She urges families to check with their doctors to make sure their children's vaccinations are up to date.
“Now is the time to make an appointment,” Munro says, “This is a busy time for primary care providers, so please make your appointment early so your child is protected when the time comes.”

If families are unable to get to a doctor's appointment in a timely manner, both Hennepin and Ramsey counties offer vaccination clinics and programs.
